Frisco ISD is a destination district because we provide more than just a core classroom education. We are committed to offering our students a comprehensive, well-rounded education that prepares them to thrive in an ever-evolving world. As a district, we understand that engagement outside the classroom is just as important as academic achievement, which is why we offer a diverse range of academic, co-curricular, and specialized programs that appeal to every type of learner.
One of the key reasons FISD stands apart is our Student Opportunity Model—a philosophy that allows students to pursue their passions while fostering a sense of community within each school. By keeping our schools smaller and more community-based, we give students the chance to explore multiple activities, programs, and clubs. This model ensures that every student has the opportunity to engage in a variety of experiences, rather than being forced to choose a single path early on, as is common in the larger school model.
The impact of this model is profound. Smaller schools create opportunities for greater participation across a wide spectrum of interests, from academics and athletics to the arts and extracurricular clubs. This flexibility encourages students to develop a broader skill set and fosters a strong sense of community.
While we know this model is what is best for students, I believe it is at risk as we struggle with maintaining funding for these programs due to the lack of support from the state. A staggering 25% of our operating expenses this year were due to inflationary pressures ($105m) and underfunded/unfunded mandates from the state ($65m). As we work to fill the holes left by the state, these programs that make a profound impact on our students, are in jeopardy of being reduced or cut all together.
As a board member, I will be committed to preserving and expanding this philosophy. By maintaining a focus on student choice and community engagement, we can continue to inspire creativity, leadership, and personal growth, ensuring that we are not just producing great students, but also great citizens.
